Dakota has been experiencing some GI problems over the course of the past year. This past Friday she was not able to keep any food or drink down. Daddy followed our normal routine, took her to the pediatrician received a prescription for anti-nausea medicine; they named the sickness a virus and sent them on their way. He pushed for a GI referral because of the pattern, and they named a few places we could call. Overall, the pediatrician’s office has not seemed overly concerned about the reoccurring issues. Saturday she seemed to be on the mend. We thought we would try going to a quick pizza chain for dinner (kids eat free on the weekends) so what did we have to lose? Not the right decision, we found ourselves quickly gathering our things and heading to the door after Dakota got sick in her plate … felt sorry for the dishwasher.
By Sunday morning she did not want to walk, eat, drink … even open her eyes as a matter of fact. I decided CHOA was the best route. I have been charting these “episodes” and typically they fall every 6-8 weeks. To make a long story short, the hospital was quick to admit her, glucose levels were in the 40’s (normal is 70 -100) and she was dehydrated. She went through several blood tests, an IV, an ultrasound on her belly, an upper GI and even a CT scan to eliminate that these episodes were caused by any neurological problems. We were released to come home Monday night when her glucose, protein and sodium looked to be normal again.
We are still looking for answers as to what could be causing the problem. The hypothesis right now is what they call abdominal migraines. They are running extended labs to test for Celiac Disease but this is a long shot given her symptoms.
We have been referred to a great GI doctor and hopefully we will have answers soon!
She was tangled up with wires, but never really pulled on them ...
